Angelo Henriquez has been ordered not to play in next month’s South American Under 20 Championship in favour of a loan move to Premier League Wigan Athletic.
He will remain in England despite being one of Chile’s prized assets and being the player that could give them a major chance of success at the 2013 tournament. The news has angered fans in Chile as Manchester United ordered him to stay at home to finalize the deal.
Since moving from Universidad de Chile in the summer, Henriquez is yet to make a first team appearance for the Red Devils. He didn’t officially sign until September 5th, which was too far past the deadlines for Premier League and Champions League squad lists.
However, he will be able to register for both competitions at the start of 2013, but rather him play in United’s Under 21 side, Sir Alex Ferguson said he would prefer Henriquez to gain experience in the Premier League.
Speaking with the Daily Mirror, Henriquez blamed Manchester United for not letting him play in the South American tournament but seems optimistic about his chances at the Latics.
“I asked repeatedly to go [and play for Chile] and showed desire to do so. But they want me to go to Wigan and keep playing in the Premier League, I would never say no to Chile. It would be a serious mistake, but United are not letting me go.” He said.
“I already talked to the manager Roberto Martinez and he told me that I would have more chances.
“His idea is to have me as a substitute for Kone. It will then depend on me taking advantage of them.”
Upon joining Manchester United, Henriquez scored on his Under 21 debut.
